Farmers & Organic Livestock Farming

Farmer1In ecological agriculture, man is included in the agro-ecosystem. The farmer is a central element in this. Organic farming is not only directed at a sustainable agriculture, it also takes into account the nature of animals or plants and the well being of animals. Farmer as a participant within larger ecosystems, showing respect for the intrinsic value or integrity of others within the ecosystem, both wild and domestic ones, is one of the core elements of organic farming.

Farmer2Human-animal relationship in organic livestock production lies in 'systematic operations which lead to stress, harm, disease or of the suffering of animals during the production, handling, transport and slaughtering stages should be reduced to the minimum'. A good human-animal relationship is a key factor in the determination of the animals' fear of humans. However, a good and close human-animal relationship makes it possible for the livestock farmers to determine earlier deviations in the animal's behavior, which might express the first disease symptoms. A good relationship with the animal is related with the better health status of the animals, which coincides with the aim in organic farming to minimize the use of antibiotics.
