Major Achievements

  • Tea seed meal can be included up to 2.9% of the diet without any adverse effect on health of adult Gaddi goats.
  • Tea seed saponins at the level of 600 ppm may be supplemented in broiler ration for improving nitrogen and mineral retention and to reduce triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels.
  • Optimization of ensiling combination ratio of agrowastes viz., apple pomace, spent mushroom compost and wheat straw to develop agrowaste-based feed technology.
  • Overnight digested pasteurized (at 72°C) milk whey of indigenous cattle was found to strongly inhibit the enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.
  • Gastric hydrolysate of Gaddi goat boiled milk casein showed highest antagonism (zone of inhibition being 21 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Antihypertensive activity in overnight intestinal digested 72°C pasteurized casein of indigenous cattle (71.99%) was higher in comparison to Gaddi goat (62.98%).
  • Total phenol content (TPC) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Potential (FRAP) values were increased in indigenous and Jersey cross-bred cattle boiled milks.
  • Gaddi goat boiled milk whey proteins (β-lactoglobulin, α-lactalbumin), appeared to be resistant to both gastric and intestinal digestion under in vitro conditions.
  • A total of 376 rumen bacteria, and five fungal isolates capable of degrading hydrolysable tannins (HTs) were obtained from the rumen of migratory Gaddi goats. A total of 106 bacteria could degrade HTs extracted from native plants namely Quercus leucotrichophora, Terminalia arjuna, T. chebula, T. bellerica, Pyrus pashia, Mangifera indica and Syzygium cumini.
  • Impact and implications of rumen microbial fermentation of added phytochemicals in ensiled forages has been deciphered.
  • Treatment with allyl isothiocyanate (0.008% v/v) reduced inflammatory and pre-neoplastic changes in the urinary bladder of fern-fed (Dryopteris nigropalaceae, 20% w/w, 360 dpf) Guinea pigs.
  • The concentration of ptaquiloside and pterosin B in some of the ferns collected from Kullu and Chamba regions of Himachal Pradesh ranged from 0 to 358.6 ± 70.5 mg/g and 0 to 652.4 ± 50.0 mg/g, respectively.
  • Profiling of lantadenes content in the leaves of Lantana camara collected from 10 districts of Himachal Pradesh revealed highest concentration of lantadenes in district Mandi (71.72%) and lowest in Bilaspur (33.41%).
  • Asparagus adscendens fruit saponins-enriched fraction (100 μg) exhibited significantly enhanced specific antibody and cellular immune response against ovalbumin in mice, thereby suggesting adjuvant activity.
