Dr. B. P. Mishra born in Odisha, did his schooling at DN High School, Keonjhar and Intermediate Science at BJB College, Bhubaneswar before getting his B V Sc & AH degree from Odisha Veterinary College, OUAT, Bhubaneswar. He got his M.V. Sc and Ph.D. from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar (Deemed University) followed by a Post doctoral overseas associateship in Animal Biotechnology from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, USA. He is a fellow of National Academy of Veterinary Science(NAVS) and Indian Society of Veterinary Immunology & Biotechnology(ISVIB).
He worked in the area of Molecular Genetics and Animal Biotechnology and has been associated with different findings and contributions in the area of animal genomics and biotechnology. He has contributed significantly in the area of Molecular Genetics and Animal Biotechnology. He has worked in assessing the genome diversity and evolutionary relationship amongst various indigenous buffalo/cattle populations. His group has made significant contribution in the area of functional genomics of riverine buffalo mammary gland. His work on buffalo genomics has helped to characterize and document new breeds of indigenous buffalo apart from work related to functional genomics related to milk trait and first report on A1/A2 beta casein allele profile of indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds of India. His work on host-pathogen interaction, gene characterization and development of genetic tests was published in high impact journals. His work on molecular genetic characterization of native animal biodiversity has helped in indigenous breed characterization and documentation.
He had worked at various research Institutes under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Worked as Scientist (AG&B) at National Research Center on Camel (NRCC), Bikaner during 1996-2000 and initiated Molecular Genetics and DNA Fingerprinting research in Indian camels. As Sr. Scientist (Animal Biotechnology) & I/c DNA Fingerprinting Unit at NBAGR, Karnal 2000-2008 initiated Functional Genomics work and carried out Buffalo genomics research. Worked as Principal Scientist 2008-2011 at NBAGR, Karnal before moving to IVRI, Izatnagar as Head, Veterinary Biotechnology Division in 2011. Established modern biotechnology lab/infrastructure during 2011-2014 and initiated Genomics and Bioinformatics research at Biotechnology Division, ICAR-IVRI. Further worked as Joint Director (Research), ICAR-IVRI since 2014 onwards and initiated quality research publications in high impact peer reviewed journals which resulted in quantum jump in IF/paper. Also facilitated IP portfolio of the Institute by getting highest number of Patents/Designs/Copyright granted to IVRI during 2014-2019. Worked as Project Coordinator for ICAR multi-centric All India Network/ Outreach projects viz. AINP-Gastrointestinal Parasitism(GIP), AINP- Neonatal Mortality(NM), AINP-Diagnostic Imaging & Management of Surgical Conditions(DIMSCA), ORP on Zoonotic Diseases & ORP on Monitoring Drug Residues & Environmental Pollutants(MDREP) during 2014 onwards. During the period Animal Genomics research get a focused attention and initiated research projects related to Genomic Selection in livestock.
He has been working in various capacities viz. Member - Research and Technology Advisory Committee(RTAC) for Animal Husbandry and Dairying Sector of GoI, Ministry of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Govt. of India (2020); Member - Scientific Advisory Committee of National Institute of Animal Biotechnology(NIAB), Hyderabad (2015-2019); Member of Research Advisory Committee of Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology(IIAB), Ranchi (2016-2019), Expert Member PMC on Cattle Genomics of DBT (2017-18); Member of DBT Expert Committee for Programme Support on Technological Innovations and Ecological Research for the Sustainable Use of Bio-resources in the Sikkim Himalaya (2015-16); Member Central Steering Committee(CSC) of the Centrally sponsored scheme on “Conservation of Threatened Breeds of Livestock”, DAHDF, MoA, GoI (2008-10); - Member - Task force for North-East Biotechnology Twining Programme of Department of Biotechnology, GOI, New Delhi (2011-13); Expert member for DBT, New Delhi sponsored “Programme Support on Technological innovations and Ecological Research for the sustainable use of Bio-resources in the Eastern Himalaya” (2009-10); Expert Member FAD-23 Sectional Committee on Biotechnology of Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi (2012-2014); Member-Institute Management Committee of National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal (2002-05; 2008-11); Member-Institute Management Committee of Central Avian Research Institute, Izatnagar (2013-2020); Member – Board of Management, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar (2014 – 2020); Member – Academic Council, IVRI Deemed University, Izatnagar (2011 – 2020); Member Secretary- Research Advisory Council, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar (2014 – 2020); Member – Extension Council, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar (2014 – 2020)
During the research career of over 30 years, undertaken several projects related to animal biotechnology/molecular genetics as Project Investigator and collaborator. His group has contributed immensely towards enrichment of genomic resources for indigenous buffaloes in terms of expressed sequence tags libraries, GenBank accessions etc. He has published over 200 peer reviewed research papers and technical articles in international/national journals of repute.
